greater negativity was elicited by targets preceded by larger than by smaller quantities. Experiment 2 replicated the numerical distance and change direction effects for numerical judgments, but found no negative distance effect in a color comparison task when the same stimuli were used. Additionally, ERP effects of numerical distance were found under implicit conditions, and task proficiency in the number condition modulated implicit and explicit numerical distance ERP effects. These results suggest that the neural systems involved with processing numerical magnitudes contribute to the construction of meaningful, contextual representations, are partly automatic, and display marked individual differences. This method empirically approximates the p-value distribution of sets of unrelated genes based on a permutation approach, and tests whether predefined sets of biologically-related genes are associated with survival. The results from a comparison with a published theme-driven approach revealed non-uniform distributions, suggesting a significant problem exists with false positive rates in the original study.

“Basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors are widely distributed in eukaryotic organisms and are thought to be one of the largest families of regulatory proteins. This important family of transcriptional regulators plays crucial roles in plant development. However, a systematic analysis of the bHLH transcription factor family has not been reported in Chinese cabbage. In this study,
230 bHLH transcription factors were identified from the whole VX-770 molecular weight Chinese cabbage genome and compared with proteins from other representative plants, fungi and metazoans. The Chinese cabbage bHLH (BrabHLH) gene family could be classified into 24 subfamilies. Phylogenetic analysis of BrabHLHs along with bHLHs from Arabidopsis and rice indicated 26 subfamilies. The identification, classification, phylogenetic reconstruction, conserved motifs, chromosome distribution, functional annotation, expression patterns and interaction networks of BrabHLHs were analyzed. Distribution mapping showed that BrabHLHs were non-randomly located on the ten Chinese cabbage chromosomes. One hundred and twenty-four orthologous bHLH genes were identified between Chinese cabbage and Arabidopsis, and the interaction networks of the orthologous genes were constructed in Chinese cabbage. Quantitative RT-PCR analysis showed that expressions of BrabHLH genes varied widely under different abiotic stress treatments for different times. Thus, this comprehensive analysis of BrabHLHs represents a rich resource, aiding the elucidation of the roles of bHLH family members in plant growth and development.

“BACKGROUND: We previously found the down-expression of SM22 in an experimental animal model of colorectal cancer by performing a proteomic analysis. In this study, we addressed the expression and molecular mechanisms of SM22 in human colorectal cancer. METHODS: To evaluate the expression of SM22 in colon cancers, Western blot and immunohistochemistry were performed in 13 normal, 14 adenomas, and 44 adenocarcinomas. To address the role of SM22 in colon carcinogenesis, SM22 was restored in the colon cancer cells by the transfection with the pIRES2 vector containing full-length SM22 cDNA and tested for tumorigenicity in vivo and in vitro. RESULTS: SM22 was found to be significantly down-regulated in adenocarcinoma (58%) compared with adenoma (21.4%) and normal (15.3%). The loss of SM22 correlated with poor differentiation of tumor (P = 0.009) and lymph node metastasis (P = 0.029).
